Short and Interesting Stories of Hindu Monkey God Hanumanji

HanumanJi is one of the great heroes of Ramayana. He is a wholehearted devotee of Rama.

His birth starts with an Apsara, Punjikastala. Once Punjikastala was roaming in a forest, she saw a monkey in deep meditation, who was sitting in a cross-legged posture. She burst out laughing for his funny posture. The monkey Rishi opened his eyes and said angrily -"Why are you laughing at me? Because of my monkey shaped face? I curse you henceforth you will become a monkey yourself. And you will remain this way until you give birth to an avatar of Shiva."

Punjikastala walked aimlessly and went to an ashram. She started a new life with her monkey shaped face and new name Anjana. There she married to Kesari, the king of monkeys. Both Anjana and Kesari worshipped Lord Shiva. One day after finishing their prayer Anjana felt something drop on her hand. It was pudding. Immediately they heard a heavenly voice of Lord Shiva, "I am pleased. Take this offering. It is the power of the wind," she swallowed the pudding. Subsequently, she gave birth to an incarnation Pawan Putra Hanuman.

One day in the morning Hanuman was terribly hungry. He called his mother-"Ma, I am hungry" but when he found no sign of his mother, he decided to find food. Suddenly he saw the rising sun in the east. He thought it was a red ripe watermelon... and yummy "Ma has never got it for me." He pursued it to eat it. Suddenly Rahu came but Hanuman thrashed him. When Rahu complained it to Indra, Indra became so enrage that he struck Hanuman with his thunderbolt (Bajra). After hearing this wind god Pawan went to patallok along with Hanuman. As Pawan left the earth, there was no air in the world. All creatures started to die. Devas were all shocked. They revived Hanuman and blessed him with multiple boons to appease Pawan.

When Hanuman was assigned to go to Lanka to find out Sita, he flew over the ocean. At that time the Gods sent the great serpent, Surasa, to test Hanuman's strength and smartness. Surasa saw Hanuman and said-"Come into my mouth, I am going to eat you." Hanuman Said- "I am on a mission to find out Sita, I must go." But Surasa refused to accept. So Hanuman became bigger and bigger, and Surasa opened her mouth wider and wider. Hanuman suddenly became very small and entered into Surasa's mouth and came out again through her ear. Surasa pleased by his smartness and blessed him.

While roaming in Lanka Hanuman saw Sita was applying sindoor (vermilion) on her forehead for the long life of her husband Rama. Hanuman also covered his entire body with sindoor for the long life of Lord Rama to prove his love.

After completion of the Ramayan war Sita gave him a beautiful pearl necklace as a gift but he declined it saying he does not accept anything that is devoid of Rama's name.
