Personalised Children's Books Make Underrepresented Kids Feel Included

Children love to see themselves represented in books. Whether it's through seeing kids of their own gender, skin tone, hair texture, family configuration, or other traits, it is incredibly important for healthy psychological development for kids to know that they are represented.
This is especially true of children who are typically underrepresented in mainstream media. For example, children of colour, children with disabilities, children with non-English names, childrlesbian parents, and children who don't conform to traditional gender roles have a very hard time feeling normal and well integrated into the social world if they are only ever shown books with white, able-bodied protagonists who have a traditionally configured families and "normal" gendered interested (i.e., girls wearing pink and playing with dolls, and boys wearing blue and playing with trucks).
Likewise, it can be hard for children who are represented in mainstream children's media to understand and accept children whose backgrounds are different from theirs if they only ever see one type of child portrayed in media. These strict rules of what is shown and what is not shown based on adherence to arbitrary values of normalcy can lead to intolerance and low self-esteem later in life. By not showing a diverse cast of characters in children's media, children are robbed of the opportunity to expand their horizons and to grow into open-minded and accepting adults.
Fortunately, there has been a recent surge in children's publishers creating content for all kinds of different kids. There are also some companies who take this a step further by allowing parents to create personalised children's books for their kids. These services allow parents to provide a photo of their child's face to be used in the book, and parents can then customise the book further by choosing the child's hairstyle, hair colour, skin tone, and other features.
The personalised children's books then lead the child on a wonderful adventure that the parent can often select - there are a number of stories that feature outer space, the ocean, and other kinds of magnificent, captivating, and child-friendly adventures that kids love. No matter the child's appearance, any child can see themselves featured in these books, and it can do a whole lot to boost their self-esteem. It's also an exciting opportunity for children with uncommon or non-English names to get to read about characters with the same name as them.
Even beyond the level of representation, it is just very exciting for any child to find themselves featured in their own adventure story. Children who receive these custom books as gifts will want to hear them read over and over and over again, and to enthusiastically point themselves out in the pictures. A personalised book could also be an incredibly helpful tool to encourage children who are reticent about learning to read to take the first step. After all, most early readers know how to spell their own names, and the rest is easy!
