Schools Help Students Get Their Feet Off The Ground, But The Rest Is Up To The Students!
Wow... I just recently read somewhere that once students complete
their formal education, such as high school or college, many don't
bother picking up another book for the rest of their lives! For this
educator and life-long learner, this is a frightening thing for me to
even think about! Why wouldn't we always want to learn more?
Sadly, as an inner-city schoolteacher I have seen evidence of this lack of interest in learning. I have personally witnessed many students making their life-long goals something as simple and small as just graduating high school. It's almost like they think a high school diploma is the end-all grand prize of life. Many of these kids believe that if they just graduate high school then they have done something special. And in many ways they have done something big, but it's a HUGE mistake to think that that's all there is in life.
I shutter when I pause for a moment and wonder what would have happened to me if my education had stopped right there as an 18-year old high school graduate... Well, for one, I certainly wouldn't have been qualified to become a schoolteacher, nor would I have been able to write this article.
Thank goodness my development did not stop there! Sadly, though, for many it does... Listen, I know that not everyone wants to go to college, but as I mentioned earlier about picking up another book after high school, many don't even do this. What could be easier than reading a free book from your free public library during your own free time? Remember, what they teach you in school will only help you get your feet off of the ground. After that, it's up to you as to whether or not you're going to just hover in that same 18-year old high school spot, or maybe the same 22-year old college spot for the rest of your life. Or will you be self-driven and propel yourself forward toward your dreams!
Now teens and even tweens, go learn, lead, and lay the way to a better world for all of us. Don't waste time hovering. Do well in school and graduate with no regrets because a diploma is important. However, remember that self-education has always been the secret to success of the "Sages of the Ages". And once again, thanks for all that you do, and all that you will do...
