The Great I AM
Now and then I hear my pastor say something like this at my
Christian Church: "Christianity is one generation away from extinction."
He says that in order to reach people in his congregation who might do
something about that. Such a message as his speaks to the heart. The
head cannot grasp it. To be a missionary, a real missionary, is to cast
aside your comforts, leave your family, say goodbye to your friends, and
let go of your dreams in order to take the path of life that Jesus
took. Web search the Bible. Look for passages in the books of Matthew,
Luke, and Acts to see how hard that path is to take.
You will see that Jesus spent a lot of time teaching the twelve men who gave up all to follow him as disciples. It was unnatural for each of them to live a life of faith, one in which five loves of bread and two fish could be blessed and transformed into food for 5,000 people. One of them betrayed Jesus, handed him over to his enemies, yet he did it because he loved Jesus so much, believed that he was the Son of God, and that by turning him over to evil, he could force God to smite evil in order to rescue his son. That was one of mankind's greatest misunderstandings, the ultimate divergence (parting from) God's purpose.
Thousands of missionaries today travel to the third world countries, well-trained to blend in with them. They dress like those people, eat the same food, drink the same water, live in squalor, and they teach the gospel. A man who grew up in such conditions in Ethiopia is now a naturalized American citizen and he attends Bible study of a startup church that I attend. He said that he grew up believing that all white people were angels. The only white people he saw were the missionaries and they did nothing but give of themselves to his people. He said he was shocked when he came to America and met white people who did not know God.
Don't believe that Christianity is anywhere near extinction. Web search "The Great I Am," a Biblical reference to God himself, and listen to the wondrous music that has been created by two talented Christian singers. Singing is another form of ministry. See the millions of views on that song. Those young men are doing God's purpose. Yet, there is some truth to what my pastor says, when you look at what is happening to Christian Churches in the United States. Many are shutting their doors. Some say it is because we are choking God's purpose in America by giving in to the endless bombardment of the attitude of all inclusiveness. Maybe so. If we as a people tolerate the sinful among us, that does not mean that God will do that and it might mean that his blessing upon our nation will be withdrawn. But, I don't think churches close their doors because of the actions of Godless people. They do that because they have lost their role in God's purpose. They are no longer fruitful. See who is on the path of God. Listen to the music. Web search "Young Life," to see who leads the millennial generation to Jesus.
