Lets face it, planning a birthday party can be stressful, time
consuming and expensive. I have a son turning one in a month and I'm
already stressing about where the party should be at, what time will
work for naps, how many people should I invite, and what will they all
do at the party? That's the key, what will all of my guests do at a
party for a child? Nobody, wants their party guests to be bored, and
everyone wants their party to be the party that everyone else is talking
about. Right now, I'm not very knowledgeable on how to entertain guests
at a 1st or 2nd birthday, but I can tell you if you have a 3-8 year
old, there is a sure way to make your party one that your daughter and
guests will remember forever.
As a child, I loved the Disney Princesses. Every year a new movie would come out, a new princess would emerge to look up to and want to be like, and thus, a new princess I wanted to come to my birthday party. Year after year, it never got old, I would have Ariel, Belle, Pocahontas, and Jasmine look-a-likes come to my birthday and make me feel like I was a princess myself. I used to believe they were the real live character come to life for my birthday party. But as I got older, I began to realize that they were just ladies portraying my beloved characters. But somehow it didn't seem to matter. Regardless if they were real or not, I still wanted them at my birthday party and my mom always found a way to get one there.
Since, as a child, I had princess birthday parties myself, I can tell you it relieves about 1-2 hours of stress for the birthday girls' mom. My mom was always much more relaxed when she hired entertainment for the party, rather than trying to do it all herself. She didn't have to worry about anything for the portion of time that the Princess was at the party. Children weren't bored, they didn't demand attention, they didn't even want to eat or drink half the time. All they know is that there is a "real live princess" at the party and they don't want to miss a second of it. The princesses and characters can face paint, do princess makeovers with makeup and hair, tell stories, sing songs from their movie, play games, teach the girls a dance or etiquette lessons, etc. Needless to say, there is something for everyone. And the parents usually sit and enjoy watching the performance themselves.

Don't just pick the cheapest one you can find unless you have thoroughly looked at their website pictures, Yelp reviews etc. Some companies have pictures on their website that are over 10 years old! That's a definite surprise when they arrive at your party and you realize that you aren't getting a young princess but a much older looking princess. Also, some companies have multiple performers and they may have their best looking girls displayed on the website but what you get at the party may not look anything like what you had hoped or paid for. Always ask, which performer will be attending your party and ask if there is a picture of her on the website. That way you ensure you know what you're paying for. Also, don't feel afraid to ask detailed questions. If they say they will sing at the party, how many songs? And will they sing the entire song? Some princess party companies only sing a verse or two of the song, which is kind of false advertising because it leaves the kids feeling a little disappointed.
Another reason why looking up reviews is a good idea is because a lot of companies show pictures on their website of their costumes and wigs when they are brand new. But by the time they are performing at your party, they are worn out and not looking so great. You can find really great companies who are not unreasonably expensive, but also remember, sometimes you get what you pay for so finding that middle ground is my recommendation.
