Hitler Reminded Us That Power Corrupts!

Hitler Reminded Us That Power C

Did you know that Hitler was on the cover of Time Magazine on January 2, 1939 as "Man of the Year"? Did you know that Hitler was running bread lines and soup kitchens in Germany during the Great Depression? Yup! It's true! During the "Great Depression" Hitler was feeding hungry German people, creating jobs that put them back to work, and simultaneously given the Germans some new-found hope. He also managed to even make the huge investment during the Great Depression to get the 1936 Olympics to take place in Germany and show the world that Germany was the real deal on the global stage. Hitler gave his German people back their national pride!

So, what went wrong with Hitler and the German people? Well, a bunch of tiny, little things went wrong. Slowly, but surely, Hitler became intoxicated by his newly found popularity, power, and prowess. He completely lost himself in power, finger-pointing, irrational tirades, racial prejudices, scape-goating, and eventually MURDER!!!

In conjunction, the German people also lost their way! This highly educated, sophisticated, and democratic German people stopped asking questions of their leaders and gave away their public power to Hitler by tying their identities too tightly to the man they called Fuhrer. The struggling German people lived vicariously through Hitler and he made them feel like winners again. However, unfortunately, their Fuhrer failed to keep himself humbly grounded. And equally important, the German people also failed because they didn't keep their Fuhrer in check either.

Now, we can debate all day long as to whether or not Hitler was born evil and destined for mass murder and destruction, and thus truly unmanageable by the German people. But let's not get lost in the Ardennes Forest here in trying to figure out who is to blame and who isn't. What I really want is for the lesson of the tragedy to shine through... Leaders pay attention now! Aspiring leaders, you pay attention too! Ready? Here goes: ALL LEADERS AND FUTURE LEADERS MUST NOT LOSE THEMSELVES IN SUCCESS!!! And all followers must keep asking questions, too!

Now teens and even tweens, go learn, lead, and lay the way to a better world for all of us. If you're a leader remember that you lead people, not yourself. Do the right thing and make us and your future children and their future children proud of you! And once again, thanks for all that you do, and all that you will do...
