Guardians of the Galaxy at Disney's California Adventure - Another Fantasy Studio's Take
"Disneyland will never be complete, as long as there is imagination left in the world."
-Walt Disney
"Guardians of the Galaxy - Mission: BREAKOUT!" will take its place as a replacement for the "Twilight Zone Tower of Terror" at Disney's California Adventure park. The new attraction will open up during the summer of 2017, while the former will close down in early 2017.
I believe this to be a really excellent move on the part of Disney. Marvel has been and continues to be a very successful brand for them. Not everything needs got come from a classic film, a PIXAR film, or Star Wars. One of the key things that will be coming will be this idea to change and update the existing attraction as time goes on. As the universe of Guardians of the Galaxy expands, so too will it on the attraction.
One curious thing to note, thus far, is exactly how they are going to use the elevator shafts. How will an up and down motion translate into such a dynamic world as Guardians of the Galaxy? This is the huge question which should be answered very soon.
While Twilight Zone Tower of Terror is a fine attraction, in all due honesty, it is beginning to feel a bit dated. The original, in Florida, opened up in 1994. Attraction and ride technology has changed quite a bit since then. The version is California is a paired down version from Florida's. As well, if you really want to ride the Tower of Terror, don't go to California Adventure, as there are plenty more Disney parks, worldwide, that have that attraction (some better than others).
Another thing that Guardians of the Galaxy has going for it are cute characters. I'm sorry, but that raccoon named Rocket is absolutely adorable and his place in the plot is just perfect.
This universe also has some really awesome, and more up to date humor.
Not to say that The Tower of Terror is not without its classic theme, however, Guardians of the Galaxy's hit film soundtrack is playing right into the hip retro-ness that today's audiences can appreciate. This music is also perfect for California Adventure. Disney strives to be as timeless as they can. This music can certainly stand the test of time.
Is this change without controversy? Certainly not. Theme park guests get emotionally attached to something that they wish to be there time after time. However, Tower of Terror was put there, as a financial move, to try to bring more guests into an already ailing park. The move barely worked. Now, a lot of time has passed, and Disney has had a good while to look at their balance sheets, no doubt, deciding what to do better with that area of the park.
I think that they have found a really amazing solution that will certainly grow, as audiences grow with it.
It is, therefore, this fantasy entertainment studio gives this move ten stars all around!
