Middleschool is the age when boys begin to use fashion as a way to explore their personality, and through the highschool years a guy's style becomes more well defined.

 Their focus is almost always on comfort while emulating a particular look.

 Every social group has a signature look whether it's the skateboarders, the preps, or the jocks. However, there are some common style elements that are popular across the board.
Here are some fail-safe back to school guidelines for this year's middle and high school guys:*

• Athletic shorts and shirts are the go-to basics for any school aged guy.
• Bold and bright, colorful crew socks is a surging trend. The Nike Elite brand socks are the most popular, but other sport brands offer similar sock lines.
• It's all about the sneakers, and Jordans, LeBrons and Roshe Runs are just a few that top the list. Pairing athletic slides with cool or crazy socks is another comfortable, trendy look.
• Sports brands like Nike, Adidas, and Under Armor are always in. Other popular brands include H&M, Hollister, Tony Hawk, Urban Pipeline and Levi's.
• Everything from socks to backpacks is better in bright colors or neon colors. Crazy mis-matched color combinations are even more popular.
• Unless temps are sub-zero, a hoodie is the winter coat to have. Pockets and thick fabric go a long way towards making this more practical.
• Backpacks sporting logos like Nike, Adidas or JanSport are sure things. Plaids, bright colors and lots of specialty compartments make them even better.

According to a Business Insider study on how teens are spending their money, the overall trend for 2014 is athletic wear and "athleisure" wear, a term for comfortable, stylish clothes that can be worn for athletic activities or leisure activities. Think athletic shorts over jeans, sneakers over Dockers. That's right, middleschool and highschool guys everywhere will be trudging through the snow to the bus stop in athletic shorts and flashy, expensive sneakers.

While most guys will want to pick clothes and styles that fit in with the overall trends, there are ways they show off their personalities. Tee-shirts with funny or interesting graphics are a great choice. Always popular are shirts with sport team logos. Popular accessories include stylish belts, the extremely popular paracord bracelets, and other simple masculine jewelry. Of course, the most important element of any young guy's signature style will most likely be his sneaker of choice.
