Kids and Teens
Why Do They Think Cutting Gym Class and Recess Is The Answer?
Kids need to burn off energy in order to concentrate on their
studies. If you take that away from them and you're going to have some
very unhappy teachers and unruly children. We have an obesity epidemic
in America already, why do we want to contribute to that?
2 of our boys hate school. What they hate is sitting in class all day long. They don't have any medical problems, they are just boys and they like to play outside. Even at home these 2 are outside the majority of the day. They don't care to watch a movie or play a board game. They want to play football, trucks, ride 4 wheelers and dirt bikes etc...
I've noticed that if I allow the kids to play as soon as they get home from school and tackle their homework at night, they do it without any complaints and they finish it without getting up from the table. You need to burn all the energy out of their arms and legs before you'll get them to use their brains for learning.
Cutting gym class and recess is not the answer. Besides helping the kids concentrate better and work harder on their school work, it gives them much needed exercise. Some of these kids do not get this exercise at home. If you were to cut out gym and recess, you are taking away their only chance at a healthy childhood.
So I say no to ever cutting out these 2 very important periods in school. If anything I'd make them have gym class every day. If you would add up all of the minutes the teacher spends getting the class to settle down and be quiet, you could easily put that towards another gym class.
How about we stop spending so much time on testing theses students so the schools can get their money from the state? I remember testing 1 maybe 2 times a year when I was in school. It seems like the kids are always taking standardized tests. Whatever happened to teaching my kids? There are so many tests and new ways to do things, it takes away from the most important thing. Teaching!
I'm not a big fan of the new common core curriculum either. We all turned out just fine with the way we were taught reading, writing and arithmetic. Now somebody was bored and needed a job, so they came up with all these new ways to achieve the same results.
That's for another article, but the point is they keep adding more "stuff" to the classroom and the kids can only physically and mentally do so much! Just like we need a coffee break sometimes, these kids need a recess break! Say YES to recess and gym class.
