Transformative Leadership

What is Transformative leadership?
As a student leader who is able to attend different types of leadership seminars, training and conventions, I believe that the most effective and successful leadership style is transformative leadership. It is all about transforming people and the society as a whole. It emphasizes the role of the youth who needs to be innovative, dynamic and eager to reconstruct our ailing nation from its developing condition to a more stable country and encourage fellow Filipinos to become catalysts of change and be modern day heroes.

Transformative leaders convert followers into leaders and make emergent leaders into great leaders. They articulate the vision in a clear and appealing manner, lead by example, manage to communicate it effectively and most importantly, empower followers to achieve the vision. By acting as role models, they inspire fellow leaders to put the good of the whole organization above self-interest.
Among the qualities of a successful transformative leader that I like most:
  1. empowerment,
  2. influence followers,
  3. can promote among the followers to put extra effort to attain common goals,
  4. go beyond the call of duty,
  5. motivate others to achieve more than they thought was possible, and
  6. agent of change
Empowerment, in the sense that a transformative leader empowers fellow leaders and followers to function at their best. An effective leader also influences followers by setting a good example. He/she can promote extra effort among followers to attain common goals, go beyond the call of duty even if it is not required. He/she can also motivate others to achieve more and be an agent of change by making a difference among his followers. In other words, the success of an organization depends not only on the performance of the leader but also with his/her subordinates.

Let us take teachers as transformative leaders in their own little way. The legacy that they leave to their students will be there forever no matter how diverse the learners are. What I am referring to is the way teachers facilitate instruction to students with different learning styles and multiple intelligences. Their influence to the learners in thriving for excellence and becoming morally upright individuals in the future contribute much to the total development of the person as a whole. Teachers are able to make a change among the lives of their learners for bringing out the best in them.

Allow me to cite the difference between a teacher and life. A teacher gives lessons first, then followed by tests but in real life you are given tests first before you learn your lessons. In other words, we learned through experience.

Another example is our student leaders. By setting a good example to their constituents, they are able to produce more leaders. They serve as models for others to follow. They do not focus on management and planning only but more on implementation. That is why they are looked-up by their subordinates. By doing this, they create more leaders in their followers; again due to examples they set.

Thus, effective transformative leaders make a change within themselves first before they can influence others. They should be a man of VALUE rather than a man of riches because in the end, ATTITUDE matters and it should start now.

The concepts that I introduced in this article are no longer new to you readers but what I shared is what I have learned from the different seminars that I have attended in my four years of being a student leader.
