Technology On Children Development

Children receive information easily. They do what they see. With the advance in technology, everyone can access anything at anytime, and so can children. So, do not be surprised if you hear a child cursing today. They probably see someone say it on the Internet and copy it.

About a few weeks ago, I was surprised by my ten year-old student cursing when his friend nudged his arm. Later, I realized that it was not only him who had ever been cursing in my class. It is such a pity that these kids say those bad words easily as if they are not bad things to say.

Moreover, technology has also created an individualistic generation. We often see that when kids play a game on their gadget, they barely notice when someone calls them. And, when they get home from school, gadget is the first thing they look for. Then, they stay in their room for hours playing games, or browsing on the Internet. They turn into an individualist and will probably be an anti-social if that continues.

However, technology has also provided progress in children's development. Today's generation learns faster than previous generations. Today, many nine year-old children, who do not come from an English-speaking country, speak English very fluently. We can not deny that it is also because of technology. Internet mostly uses English. Whether they realize it or not, they have actually learned the language by frequently seeing it.

Technology helps children to learn not only language, but also other subjects. When doing a homework or an assignment, they can easily look for any additional information on the Internet. Nowadays, many kids know a lot about things their school never teach them about. About a couple of days ago, I was talking about famous buildings in the world with my students in the English course I work. Then I asked them about the story behind the beautiful Taj Mahal. I honestly did not expect them to answer my question but one of them did answer my question. She said she read it once on the Internet. This is one of good effects of technology.

Technology does have bad effects on children development, such as individualistic generation, bad behaviour, etc. However, despite all the bad effects of technology, we should be aware that technology does have contribution in fastening learning process on children,as long as it is used in reasonable limit.
