Readers Are The Real Leaders!

Readers Are The Real Leaders!

Many years ago President John F. Kennedy hosted a dinner for the 1962 Nobel Laureates. At that dinner he said, "I think this is the most extraordinary collection of talent, of human knowledge, that has ever been gathered together at the White House with the possible exception of when Thomas Jefferson dined alone."
Wow! Pretty impressive, wouldn't you agree? How did Jefferson become so accomplished? How did he become such a Giant among men? Well, for one, he wrote our Declaration of Independence and then later, as President of the United States, doubled the size of our country.

You want to know something interesting though? Thomas Jefferson would not have been able to write our highly esteemed and long-lasting Declaration of Independence and his famous, "All men are created equal," saying if he hadn't voraciously read deeply and widely on the Enlightenment Age and its brilliant authors, such as Spinoza, Rousseau, Newton, Montesquieu, Locke, Descartes, Hobbs, and Voltaire.

In addition, Thomas Jefferson never would have been able to make the Louisiana Purchase if he, as a strict constructionist who argued a very narrow interpretation of our Constitution, hadn't closely read the Constitution of the United States. Jefferson struggled with the decision of making the Louisiana Purchase because nowhere in the Constitution did it give the President of the United States the authority to purchase land. However, because Thomas Jefferson had read the Constitution so closely he also realized that nowhere in the Constitution did it forbid the President of the United States to purchase land. As the true leader that he was, he knew that he had to make that purchase to ensure the safety of America, and give future generations a way to support themselves through living off the land.

Walah! Problem solved! Louisiana Territory purchased! Lewis and Clark get to go on a journey of undaunted courage. And shortly after we're all singing songs about sea to shinning sea! Thomas Jefferson made this country big and he made this country great! Because Thomas Jefferson was a great reader and a great leader he was able to legally expand our country and subsequently our vision!

Now teens and even tweens, go learn, lead, and lay the way to a better world for all of us. Remember, readers are leaders; and since books are free in your local public library, thanks to Thomas Jefferson's movement to make this happen, you have no more excuses! Get busy and start your journey of undaunted courage today! And once again, thanks in advance for all that you do, and all that you will do...
