Around the globe children fear him, adults avoid him, and movie
directors love him, for he is the most enigmatic character for horror
stories and movies. There are plenty of movies based on this fictional
character, but he remains a mystery to many people. This article will
help to reveal the mystery of the ''Slenderman''.
What Is Slenderman?
He is a fictional paranormal character. His tall and thin physique makes him look like a beanpole, with a face without features and long outstretching arms. According to the legends he dwells in dark forests and abandoned places. He targets children and teenagers by intimidating them using his presence and he often causes 'Slender Sickness', which is marked by nosebleeds, hallucinations, and nightmares. There are many legends about his origin, but what is the real Slenderman story?
Where did he come from?
Originally, Eric Surge created The Slenderman as an Internet meme on June 10th 2009. He submitted two photos into the 'Paranormal Pictures' contest, held by the 'Something Awful' website's forum. The task of the contest was to edit real pictures so as to make them look paranormal. The two black and white photos submitted by Eric contained children, along with a vague figure wearing a black suit. He also added text below his pictures in the form of quotations from the 'witnesses' describing the abduction of children and giving the character the name 'THE SLENDERMAN'. One such quote said:
''We didn't want to go, we didn't want to kill them, but its persistent silence and outstretched arms horrified and comforted us at the same time.
-1983, Photographer unknown,
Presumed dead.
How did he become famous?
This mysterious character serves the fountainhead of horror stories and movies. Slenderman movies and stories are famous among every cohort because of its enigmatic nature. The Tall Man, Hylo (2012), Windigo, Always Watching, and Slender: The Eight Pages are some of the Slenderman movies based on this character. Proxy is another such movie, but it generated a new idea of human proxies in which the target falls under the influence of the Slenderman and performs prerogative acts, such as stabbing other people and killing them on his behalf.
Also, his popularity can be explained by the online horror series Creepypasta and YouTube serials Everyman Hybrid and Tribe Twelve. These are scary stories told in short parts, which attract children and teenagers.
Now, the question arises: Is The Slenderman Real?
He originated from the real world and developed in the virtual world. No matter how much penchant Hollywood directors have towards this character and people have towards these movies, he is, after all, a part of man's imagination. Movies, series, and folklore have been the only places where he dwells. Having said that, the question looms again: What is Slenderman?
