Remember People's Names!
Our name is like sweet music to our ears, isn't? Don't you just
love hearing your name called out? I know I do! So why don't we use this
secret of success to build better relationships and improve the overall
happiness of our lives? It's funny how such a simple thing like
remembering names and then using people's names can add so much joy to
this world.
This makes me think of someone who loved calling people by their names. That charismatic leader that I'm thinking about is Teddy Roosevelt. He was our 26th President and had a GIANT personality and an ambition to match. It is reported that he said, "I don't know if any other President has ever enjoyed the White House as much as I have." Sadly, though, after he left the presidency in 1909 to go hunt big game in Africa, his beloved Republican Party fell apart in the hands of President William Howard Taft.
Taft weighing up to 360 pounds was much bigger than Teddy Roosevelt. In contrast, though, Taft could never match the large personality or large fighting spirit of Teddy Roosevelt. Sadly, Taft had trouble remembering people's names and was never as likable, or as followed, as Teddy Roosevelt.
Later in life, Taft called The White House the loneliest place in the world. He also commented that he had trouble even remembering that he was President. On his tombstone, many accomplishments are mentioned, but what speaks most loudly is what's missing. There is nothing on his tombstone to indicate that he was ever the President of the United States of America.
Now I seriously doubt that you forgetting someone's name will change the course of history, or divide a political party, or ruin your life; but I don't doubt that it will negatively affect your sphere of influence within your own little world. So, go ahead and expend the little bit of extra energy required to learn people's names. And why not, what do you have to lose? Certainly not the presidency! And what could you gain from following this advice? Maybe... EVERYTHING!!!
Now teens and even tweens, go learn, lead, and lay the way to a better world for all of us. Remember, someone's name is like music to his or her own ears. So go ahead and remember his or her name, and use it often. And once again, thanks for all that you do, and all that you will do...
